Woodworking is a fun and sometimes profitable hobby. Woodworking with routers is probably the best way to create useful and great looking projects. The router is a versatile and reliable tool for making fine tight fitting joints and clean and crisp cuts to make any project a long lasting and a professional looking job.
When setting up my shop I looked at all the different power tools I would need and the number one my list was a good quality router. There are many brands of wood routers to choose from like Makita, Bosch, Porter Cable, Hitachi, Triton, DeWalt and Milwaukee and all of them do the job quite well. Routers come with a couple different options. You can have a fixed base that is handy for routing different profiles on the edges of boards and for flush trimming Formica tops and such.
Cordless Tool Kit
To get into the real function of routing is to have a plunge base. The better routers come in kits with both fixed and plunge bases. This allows you to make mortise and tendon joints and drill very accurate holes to the correct diameter and depth. The better routers come with features like soft start and variable speed. Which is very useful in order to get the precession you want out of the tool.
My shop tools consists of a table saw that is the anchor to my shop where I cut all of my components for my projects. I have a plainer to smooth out and get my pieces to the correct thickness and a jointer to give me true square edges on my boards. Once this is finished I take the pieces to my tool of choice. The "Router".
There are plenty of other tools I have in my shop like a drill press, miter saw, and band saw, but out of all my power tools the router is the most important tool I own. Having more than one router is even better. This allows me to cut down the setup time for different steps of any given project. And believe me the money spent for routers is the best investment I have made in my shop.
To get the most out of woodworking with routers is to have a table to mount your router to, whether it be a "Shop Made" or a "Manufactured Model" and there are plenty that you can choose from. This will give you a solid base to work on and give you very precise cuts.

The BDF452HW features a Makita-built four-pole maximum torque motor that delivers 450 inch/pounds of max torque and 285 inch/pounds of PTI torque in a compact size. The BDF452HW has a two-speed all-metal transmission that delivers 0-450 RPM in low speed and 0-1,500 RPM in high for a wide range of drilling and driving applications.
